Atelier Firis Alchemy Exam

  • Technobubble covers games, gadgets, technology and all things geek. And maybe one too many Norberts. Then again, this game is called Atelier Firis, not Atelier Norbert, so props are in order for our protagonist. Indeed, the game chronicles the...

  • Born and raised in the sealed mining town of Ertona, Firis is forbidden from leaving her village. Instead, she spends most of her days helping townsfolk search for ore, thanks to her strange ability to find them rather easily. In between her search...

  • You can also use catalysts to further boost the quality of your creations. The more you make an item, the more your proficiency raises for said recipe. This can also open the path for new recipes such as powerful Ori Bombs, for example, which require making a certain amount of regular bombs and Blau Bombs. While the alchemy system can get pretty deep and is easily the strongest part of Atelier Firis, the battle system pales in comparison. Combat is pretty bare bones, serving up a standard turn-based mechanic without any frills. This makes combat feel like something you have to do instead of something you want to do. The story, meanwhile, leans toward the cute and charming side. You can still craft an engaging story with a simple premise, especially by doing a good job in portraying interactions and relationships with other characters. In this regard, there are times when Atelier Firis succeeds and times when it also stumbles.

  • The relationship between Firis and sister Liane, as well as teacher Sophie and rival Il are done well overall, for example. Part of it is because the game takes its time to show the development of those relationships to you. Regardless, the result is that I did not care about these party members as much as I wanted to. The game also tries to reintroduce the time limit mechanic, which was skipped by the last game. It only applies to the first part of Atelier Firis, which gives you in-game days to pass your alchemy license exam.

  • Although days is actually quite generous and more than enough time to earn the prerequisites for the test, it contributes to a rushed feeling for the first part of the game. It made me feel like I had a ticking time bomb to deal with, which added some stress and made me feel like I had to hurry up. To be honest, I actually found Norbert to be quite hilarious, especially since his trollish character plays off really well against Firis eager and innocent personality. Add multiple endings and Atelier Firis could have you playing for quite some time.

  • It can come in very handy for the potential after-exam battles. You know, just like an actual exam. Firis passes! The hardest part of this challenge is actually the written exam. For example, one question asked what item would be made when combining a Bush Strawberry, Distilled Water, and Fairy Parasol. Which may be sort of a crazy thing to ask, because who pays that much attention when making things? It was Apcol. Fortunately, it does only amount to a small fraction of your total, and it is very easy to make things up with the other exams. Though, if you do ace it, you can get 40 points. This one tasks you with making any high quality item. I put together a Blitz Core: Fire with over level quality and did fine enough.

  • But really, this section feels like it makes the most sense. Yet, even this does have some good reasoning behind it. The best idea is to use some sort of bomb, perhaps a Lightning Bomb or something similar, to attempt to eviscerate the thing. While the fighting part seems a bit odd, the idea of seeing something you made work is a rather good test. With Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey, the licensing exam really feels like this practical demonstration of everything Firis has learned.

  • It is a test of things you probably actually learned as you played, which makes sense as a way to cap off your timed adventures and move into a more freeing experience. Posted in.

  • Share Conflict drives story. Teenagers use the power of friendship to kill their enemies, mercenaries work against a tyrannical king bent on world domination, hero rises to battle timeless evil. Firis Mistlud lives her simple life within a small mining village, concealed within a cave and cut off from the outside world. A surprise visit from a face series fans would be familiar with sparks a chain of events that sees Firis on the path to becoming an alchemist, able to handle herself in the wilds, and earn her freedom. She has one year to become a respected alchemist before she must return. Firis is the wanderlust young girl with lots of naivety. Sophia the peppy senpai, teaching the ropes. The larger world marks the biggest change to the series. As Sophia drills into your head during the prologue, Alchemy is about inspiration. As Firis explores the world, talks to people, collects new materials and levels up her abilities, new recipes for alchemy will become apparent to her.

  • It all feels without much purpose, all intended to feed back into your alchemy. LP dictates how far you can go into the world before tiring out, mandating that you return to home base before you receive penalties such as lower material yield or even passing out. The inventory of Firis as she gathers her materials is already fairly limited, and more naturally suggests to the player when enough is enough. In a post Minecraft world, this no longer sets the Atelier series apart.

  • The system for crafting is deep enough to be compelling on a surface level. Deciding on your items compared to your other ingredients, arranging them on the grid, matching colours to receive bonuses, and arranging it all to pull out the best effect can be fun. The system of adding an additional item as a catalyst to change how the board is laid out can add additional layers, but the end result is still just a run of the mill crafting system.

  • Atelier Firis does very little different in battle over a classic Final Fantasy, being turn based with basic attacks, special moves that drain MP and team shielding. Battles tie back into the Alchemic loop by making items your most powerful forms of attack, for example, hurling a bomb. Character models have the most polish, somewhat reminding me of the Tales series. Animations falter, with stilted movements repeated constantly, and sometimes no lip syncing at all. Environments keep some of the colour the characters exhibit, and once you leave the starting town it becomes brighter. The core alchemy system has some depth around it thanks to the many materials and ways to mix them with catalysts.

  • FC: User Info: Woodgar Woodgar 3 years ago 5 I think the time lime limit to taking the exam is a main failing for this. I took the exam with many areas still unexplored, many items still not synthesised, and many recipes still unlocked. Not wishing to fall too far behind I pretty much did the minimum necessary once leaving Flussheim with three letters. I ended up with four, but sort of fell in to getting the exta one. It turned out I had loads of time to spare, and could have explored a lot more and taken time to craft better and a greater variety of items.

  • I now feel that I've missed out on a fair bit of the game, as it would have been preferable, and probably even an intentional game design, to visit a lot of the areas I skipped before you get the licence. I can't confirm this, but I reckon a lot of story events in the areas I skipped over won't trigger now as they were set up to be part of the original journey events. I think it would have been a better game if you were more led in the direction of taking the exam towards the end of a more guided journey, rather than giving you a strict time limit which just encourages you to rush through. User Info: lordofelemental lordofelemental 3 years ago 6 It's actually the opposite for me as the exam part is what's limiting Firis on what she really wants to do. The game opens up a lot post exam. You can optimize for your gear, meet the ending requirements and travel the world.

  • Not all areas are accessible on exam period, and not all characters are there too. I've spend 40 hours on exam period and clocked at hours on post game and I'm still not done for the game. Atelier Firis has the greatest of both the classic timed and new age timeless Atelier styles.

  • You can help by adding to it. January Atelier Firis is a role-playing game with a time management aspect. Players can perform actions such as exploration, combat, and item synthesis as they wish, although this causes the in-game calendar to advance, similar to some earlier Atelier games. Players are expected to finish the main quest of passing an alchemist certification exam within a year, with the rest of the game not limited by in-game time.

  • As time passes day and night will cycle. It is the first game in the Atelier series to feature an open world. Catalysts are used to change the size of the panel and add new lines, and thus new bonuses. The usage of catalysts can result in greatly different versions of the same item. There is, additionally, mass synthesis, or the ability to create items that change the fields themselves. Item synthesis is not bound to a single location. Instead, it can be performed at any campfire found in the land, using a portable atelier.
    Link: https://oklahomadriver.com/
  • This atelier can be decorated, and with some of the decorations offering special effects. Further, recipes for synthesis can be found from all kinds of activities, such as fighting, meeting characters, gathering materials, and the act of synthesis itself. For instance, a rock can be broken with Firis's staff, or it can be blown up with an item, which may result in different materials. Item effects and monster actions and abilities may change by the weather and time of day. Depending on the character's selected action, their wait time for their next turn may change. Through attacking enemies several times, they can be inflicted with "break", which makes them unable to move. They can be left stunned until they recover, or they can then be attacked for greater damage. As the characters perform action, a gauge fills, allowing characters to use "chain burst" activities when full. Any characters that move consecutively can use a combination attack together.
    Link: https://youtube.com/watch?v=jZRjBrVjSmY
  • Depending on the gauge and number of characters attacking together, chained skills can be used. Using these skills increases the "linkage" rate, which allows the use of finishing attacks once it reaches a certain value. All characters are capable of using items, however, only alchemists can use all items.

  • Ertona is a mining town closed off from the rest of the world by a big gate that very few people are allowed to pass through. One day, a travelling alchemist, Sophie Neuenmuller , visits the town and discovers that Firis shows promise to learn alchemy. With her new abilties, Firis is now convinced that she has what it takes to survive in the outside world. However, her parents are not yet convinced. A compromise is reached and Firis will be allowed to travel the outside world within a one year timeframe. During this time, she must make it to Reisenberg and pass the exam to become a certified alchemist. If she fails, she has to return home. If she succeeds, Firis is free to travel the world without restrictions for unlimited time. Firis sets out on her journey accompanied by her sister Liane , who is used to the outside world through her job as a hunter.

  • Through the players actions, Firis can find different futures for herself which results in different endings. In addition to the usual gathering points, the player can interact with other elements such as trees and rocks to gather materials. For example, the player can use a pickaxe to harvest fruit from a tree or an explosive to extract ore from a large rock or crystal. As the game progresses, the player will be able to use more and more tools to interact with fields or travel faster. The player can also put up the Atelier Tent at bonfires, which allows for the usual actions associated with the workshop areas of the series - synthesis, resting, putting items into storage, changing equipment, and more.

  • All characters that the player currently have in their party will appear in the tent and the player is able to see events with them by talking to them. The first big main goal of the game is to reach Reisenberg within days. Time passes as the player character, Firis, moves in the fields or when performing actions such as resting and synthesizing. The player is free from a major time restriction once they have passed the exam, but the passing of time and the day-night cycle will continue to exist. The second main goal of the game is to explore the world until Firis has found a future for herself.

  • Verified Purchase I have finally got around to completing a few endings instead of doing what most people do, rushing things just to get the first reviews while only spending a few piss poor hours on the game. The game is such a light-hearted Jrpg that its feels quite different and original from most Rpg's I had played before. There's no played out good vs evil like many many Rpg's before it, instead we are with a continuation from the previous game in which Sophie has an apprentice who's main goal is to pass a Alchemist license exam. It's a slice of life feel and atmosphere which I found very enjoyable and relaxing.

  • The tree logs can be very annoying when collecting ingredients. Atelier Sophie from my experience I found to be very bug and glitch free compared to Atelier Firis. The amount of bugs and glitches did dampen the experience. There are also changes they add that were not great and were cons. Like how your party members are handled, Sophie did it better by having you switch freely instead of having to go look for a bar or Inn to find your party members talk to them and then add them back. Also I felt you were more bonded metaphorically with your party members in Atelier Sophie, relationship levels are back in Firis too.
