  • Taking into account a set of three 10 sided dice, we want to obtain a sum at least equal to As we can see, we have to add all permutations for 27, 28, 29, and 30, which are 10, 6, 3, and 1 respectively. The probability of rolling a sum out of the set, not higher than X - the procedure is precisely the same as for the prior task, but we have to add only sums below or equal to the target. Having the same set of dice as above, what is the chance of rolling at most 26? If you were to do it step by step, it would take ages to obtain the result to sum all 26 sums. But, if you think about it, we have just worked out the complementary event in the previous problem. When to use dice probability calculator? There are a lot of board games where you take turns to roll a die or dice , and the results may be used in numerous contexts.

  • Just use our dice probability calculator, and you'll see the chance is around 0. There are various types of game, like lotteries , where your task is to make a bet depending on the odds. Rolling dice is one of them. Although it's inevitable to take some risk , you can choose the most favorable option, and maximize your chances of a win. Take a look at this example. Imagine you are playing a game where you have one of three options to choose from, which are: the sum of five 10 sided dice is at least 30 the sum of five 12 sided dice is at most 28 the sum of five 20 sided dice is at least 59 You only win if the option you pick comes up. You can also pass if you feel none of these will happen. Intuitively, it's difficult to estimate the most likely success, but with our dice probability calculator, it takes only a blink of an eye to evaluate all the probabilities. We can see that the most favorable option is the first one, while passing is the least likely event to happen.

In fact, you can make all the numbers up to about 20 using only the basic arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. But soon that's not enough. To start reaching bigger numbers, the video explains, you must pull in more sophisticated operations like square roots, exponents, factorials 4! This way will get you up to about , but going really big requires one more tool: the log. Here, things start to get more complicated, but the back half of the video explains how incorporating the log into the four 4s problem allows you to work out ways to make every number up to infinity. The solution, involving multiple logs and square roots, broke open this puzzle in the s. But it's still a fun exercise if you ever find yourself in possession of a lot of free time and a big piece of paper. It is aimed at helping students develop an increased understanding into the order of operations and how the use of brackets in an equation can modify the solution. The lesson activity requires students to use up to four fours and any operation to make the numbers from 0 to Gradually, finding solutions for the remaining numbers in the list becomes more challenging. The other operation n! After naming some of the more obvious solutions, the challenge soon came to find solutions for the numbers from 1 to We decided to use the large classroom blackboard to record the solutions as they were suggested.

  • Although several solutions larger than 10 were also discovered, the number 10 itself became a bit of a sticking point. It was here that I prompted students to think of using different operations. One student suggested , but soon realised that this would not be allowed as it involved using a number other than 4. Not only did this help students find solutions to some different numbers, it also helped them to develop less complicated solutions to some of previous numbers. For example: 4! As the lesson was finishing, students were still eagerly sharing potential solutions. • With other rules, other answers are possible. Some variations allow you to use any number of 4s up to 4. Others allow more obscure mathematical operators gamma functions, for example. It can be easily demonstrated that, even by the conservative ruleset that I describe above, some numbers can be generated an infinite number of different ways. The presence of unary operators means that there are an infinite number of different patterns to search for the answers to these problems, which makes computer solutions an interesting problem, which will never have a perfect solution.

Though some people put a premium on simple formulations, I have in several places listed answers that were for some reason amusing to me, or surprisingly complex. My answer to 73 is a good example of amusing complexity, as is Since all the answers are integers, I started the search by generating a list of integers that could be build with one or two 4s. These became useful building blocks in finding the larger numbers.
